Before you begin

This guide is for general education only and is not medical advice. It does not replace advice, diagnosis or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional. Consult your clinician about your care.

01 / YOUR OPTIONS

EGGS OR EMBRYOS?

The right starting point is personal. Talk through your goals, your timing and the decisions you are ready to make now.

Egg freezing

Preserves unfertilized eggs. A future sperm source and IVF treatment would be needed when you use them.

Embryo freezing

Preserves eggs after fertilization with sperm. Discuss the sperm source, development, testing if relevant, and consent for future use.

Ask your doctor what one cycle may yield for you, how that relates to your family goals, and what uncertainty remains. Age at freezing and the number of eggs stored affect future chances. [1, 2]

Freezing cannot guarantee a baby.

02 / MEDICAL

THE CONSULTATION EDIT

A clinic’s headline success rate needs context. Ask what the percentage measures and whether it reflects patients like you.

What good data looks like

  1. Patients similar to you. Age at freezing, treatment type and relevant medical history.
  2. A clear denominator. Per egg thawed, per retrieval, per transfer or per patient?
  3. The right population. Own eggs or donor eggs? Frozen eggs or embryos?
  4. A timeframe and sample size. Which years, and how many cycles or patients?
  5. The limits of the estimate. Observed clinic outcomes or a prediction model? What remains uncertain?

Egg thaw survival, fertilization, embryo development and live birth describe different stages. Ask the clinic to explain the whole journey.

Six questions to bring

  1. How will you tailor medication, monitoring and retrieval timing to my history?
  2. Who designs my protocol, reviews my results and performs the retrieval?
  3. How will you assess and reduce my risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome?
  4. What experience does the lab have with egg freezing, and how are samples tracked?
  5. Which tests or lab add-ons are optional, and what evidence supports them for me?
  6. How are eggs or embryos stored, and what happens if I move or the clinic closes?

Before you leave: Ask for a named coordinator, expected response time and an after-hours clinical number.

PREPARATION, WITHOUT PERFECTION

A Mediterranean food spread with vegetables, grains and legumes

A routine you can live with.

Food and everyday life

Amaley’s Mediterranean diet article offers a flexible starting point: vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and olive oil. For vegetarian meals, build around proteins you enjoy.

Tell the clinic if you are restricting calories, and ask what activity is appropriate during treatment.

Your medical review

Share your history, prior cycle reports, medications and supplements. Ask which baseline tests you need.

For any supplement, ask about evidence, dose, start and stop dates. CoQ10, vitamin D and B12 are discussion topics, not a universal plan. A dietary pattern cannot promise a successful cycle.

THE BENEFITS CONVERSATION

Before you pay, ask what qualifies.

Ask your plan administrator

  1. Does my planned treatment qualify, including elective preservation if relevant?
  2. Are testing, medication, freezing and storage reviewed separately?
  3. Do you require a letter of medical necessity or other records?
  4. For Spain, what invoices, translations and proof of payment do you need?
  5. What service dates and claim deadlines apply?

Keep the paperwork

Save written plan guidance, itemized invoices, prescriptions, requested medical records, proof of payment and claim references.

An FSA has plan-specific deadlines and may offer a carryover or grace period. An HSA generally carries unused funds forward. Both have qualified-expense rules. [3]

IRS guidance includes certain fertility treatments, including IVF and temporary storage. It does not automatically make every planned freezing or long-term storage expense eligible. Confirm your expenses with your plan administrator. [4]

06 / TRAVEL

A STAY BUILT AROUND YOUR CARE

Choose a comfortable base and flexible plans. Ask the clinic when to travel and how much room your treatment dates need.

Plaza Mayor in Madrid

MADRID

Gunjan favors Salamanca for comfort and city life. Recoletos and Justicia are highlighted for IVI Madrid Centro. Confirm your exact clinic branch before booking. Busy streets around Centro and Plaza Mayor can be noisy.

The Madrid article includes OSOM, Brunchit and Balbisiana for cafés, with vegetarian-friendly food at BumpGreen, Bel Mondo and Honest Greens. Choose places near your stay and leave space for appointments. Verify current hours and locations.

A historic street in Valencia

VALENCIA

Campanar is highlighted for IVI Valencia convenience. Ciutat Vella suits historic streets, Ruzafa offers cafés and restaurants, and L’Eixample is a calmer central option. Gunjan’s personal picks are L’Eixample or La Xerea.

The blog includes I’N Coffee & Tea, Federal Café and Café ArtySana, plus La Casa Viva and Mercado Central. Check laptop policies, hours and your clinic commute before planning around a venue.

Your travel checklist

  1. Before booking. Confirm your clinic branch, dates and tests to complete before travel.
  2. Medication. Ask how prescriptions, supplies, transport and storage will work.
  3. Your accommodation. Check elevator access, reliable Wi-Fi, temperature control and nearby food.
  4. Work and appointments. Leave room for monitoring and schedule changes. Keep a private option for calls.
  5. Leisure and recovery. Ask which exercise, massage and heat exposure are appropriate, and when.
  6. Travel home. Confirm departure timing and any escort or support requirements.
07 / MEDICAL

AFTER RETRIEVAL

Organize your recovery while you have time to plan. Get written instructions that apply to you.

  1. What should I expect, and which symptoms need an urgent call or emergency care?
  2. What medication or pain relief can I use?
  3. What restrictions apply to work, exercise, sex, swimming or heat?
  4. When can I travel, and what support do I need after anesthesia?
  5. When will I receive results and have a follow-up consultation?

If symptoms concern you, contact your clinical team. Review the results, your goals and what might change before deciding whether to do another cycle.

08 / CARE AND SUPPORT

THE HUMAN PART

Friends supporting one another

Support belongs in the plan.

Vanessa’s IVF interview in The Amaley Edit is a candid conversation about costs, challenges and resilience. It is a patient experience to listen to, not a prediction of your results.

Consider the help you would value: someone at appointments, practical support with logistics, or a person who can listen without trying to fix everything.

Watch Vanessa’s IVF journey

You can ask for time before making the next decision.

09 / YOUR PLAN

YOUR NEXT DECISION

Keep the important pieces together. Write these prompts in your notes and change the plan as your questions and priorities change.

  1. The decision I am making
  2. The question I need answered
  3. Who will answer it
  4. My next action and date
  5. My budget boundary
  6. What would make me pause
