What egg freezing costs in New York, California, and Spain, and the hidden cost that keeps adding up after treatment.

The Real Cost of Egg Freezing: New York, California, and Spain

A few quick facts

  • Cost of egg freezing in NYC: an estimated $20,000 per round. Includes treatment and medication, before storage. [1]

  • Spain: $7,860, including the trip. Our budget includes treatment, medication, and a two-week stay, before storage. See the breakdown.

  • Storage is the bill that keeps coming. At $1,200 a year, ten paid years add $12,000 to the New York budget. [8]

  • One round may not be the whole story. In one study of 3,504 women, 57% had more than one round. [14]

  • Using your eggs is a separate bill. Thawing, fertilization and embryo transfer come later. [17]

Right now, egg freezing can feel like an option for the elite. I started Amaley to make egg freezing accessible and affordable.

The catch-22 of egg freezing: Freezing your eggs earlier may improve your chances of having a baby later. But saving up can take years. [12, 13]

The hidden cost of egg storage

12%

Reported fertility preservation coverage.KFF’s combined egg/sperm freezing measure, among U.S. employers with 200+ employees offering health benefits (2024). [16]

If you’re paying out of pocket in New York, I’m budgeting $20,000 for one egg-freezing cycle, including medication. Then there’s storage. At $1,200 a year, ten paid years add another $12,000. [1, 8]

What you are paying for NYC planning example
One egg-freezing cycle, including medication $20,000
Ten paid years of storage at $1,200 a year $12,000
Total before future treatment to use the eggs $32,000

$12,000

In storage alone.NYC planning example: ten paid years at $1,200 a year.

That’s 60% on top of the treatment budget, just to keep your eggs frozen.

What will it cost to use your frozen eggs?

Freezing also doesn’t cover the treatment to use your eggs later. You’ll pay to thaw and fertilize them, then transfer an embryo. [13, 17]

Extend Fertility in New York publishes these fees for using previously frozen eggs: [17]

Treatment to use your eggsExtend Fertility’s published fee
Thawing and fertilizing the eggs$6,500
One frozen embryo transfer$4,900
Additional treatment fees$11,400

Add those fees to the $32,000 freezing-and-storage example above, and you’re at $43,400. Medication, optional genetic testing, a new-patient consultation, ICSI for more than ten eggs and additional transfers can add to that. These are one clinic’s current fees; your quote and future prices can differ. [17]

Ask for the cost of using your eggs when you get your freezing quote, even if that feels a long way off. The New York and Spain budgets below cover freezing and storage; you’ll need to budget for that future treatment separately.

What egg freezing costs in New York and California

Before you compare quotes, check whether medication is included. Cofertility lists it separately from the cost of egg retrieval and freezing in these three cities: [1, 3]

Location Treatment per cycle Medication Combined estimate
New York City $10,000–$15,000 $3,000–$6,000 $13,000–$21,000
San Francisco $10,000–$15,000 $3,000–$6,000 $13,000–$21,000
Los Angeles $10,000–$15,000 $3,000–$6,000 $13,000–$21,000

Published cost ranges, before storage and additional charges. California figures cover these two cities. [1, 3]

How much does egg freezing medication cost?

Cofertility allows $3,000–$6,000 for medication, while CCRM’s NYC page lists $4,000–$10,800 for medication alone. That’s a substantial bill to leave out of a quote. FertilityIQ puts a cycle in major U.S. cities at roughly $15,000–$20,000, with storage charged separately. I’m using $20,000 for the New York treatment and medication budget. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Egg freezing prices in Spain

Now look at what these Spanish clinics charge. Both are in Amaley’s comparison tool and publish their egg-freezing prices on their own websites.

Clinic Published treatment price Storage included
IVI From €3,090. [5] Not specified on the pricing page.
Institut Marquès: Preserve ESSENTIAL €2,695 Two years. [6]

For Spain, I’m budgeting €3,000 for treatment and €1,000 for medication. That’s €4,000, or $4,600, at an assumed exchange rate of €1 = $1.15. The medication figure is an allowance; your prescription determines what you pay. [7, 10]

That is $15,400 less than the $20,000 New York treatment budget, before travel and storage. Add flights and a place to stay, along with the other travel allowances below, and the Spain budget comes to $7,860 before storage.

Annual egg storage fees in Spain can range from €300 to €400, or $345–$460 at the exchange rate used here. I’m using €300 a year in the budget below. Check how many years your clinic includes before you start paying. [7]

Egg freezing abroad: treatment, flights, and hotels

I’ve allowed for one traveler and 14 hotel nights in Spain, plus meals and local transport. Here’s the budget for one self-funded cycle and ten paid years of storage, all in U.S. dollars.

For help planning where to stay and getting around, see our egg-freezing travel guides to Madrid and Valencia.

Expense NYC example Spain example
Treatment and medication $20,000 $4,600
Additional consultation and testing allowance Included in the $20,000 budget $500
Round-trip flight $0 $900
Hotel $0 14 nights × $90 = $1,260
Additional meals and local transport $0 $300
Travel reserve $0 $300
Treatment and trip before storage $20,000 $7,860
Ten paid years of storage $12,000 $3,450
Total with storage $32,000 $11,310

Even with flights and hotels, the Spain example is $12,140 lower before storage. After ten paid years of storage, the difference reaches $20,690, or about 65%.

Budget assumptions: €1 = $1.15; one traveler; 14 hotel nights; monitoring and anesthesia included in treatment; ten storage payments at unchanged rates, before any free-year credits. This example excludes extra medical care, future IVF, unpaid leave, coordination and payment fees. Use your own quotes, travel dates, included storage years and insurance benefits to calculate your total.

What if you need more than one round?

In a study of 3,504 women at Shady Grove Fertility, more than half (57%) had more than one round, and about one in five (21%) had three or more. [14]

If you’re working out whether you can afford this, ask for the price of a second round now. Using the same budgets, this is what two or three rounds could cost before storage. The appendix breaks down the Spain costs.

Number of rounds NYC treatment and medication Spain treatment and travel
One $20,000 $7,860
Two $40,000 $15,720
Three $60,000 $23,580

These estimates assume a separate trip for each round. If your treatment schedule allows, you could stay for multiple rounds in one trip, saving on repeat flights while budgeting for a longer stay. Multi-cycle discounts are not included. Storage is separate. Ask whether one annual fee covers eggs from all your rounds. [9]

What I’d look for in a clinic

Before paying a deposit, I’d want to know who is doing the retrieval and who I can call if I’m worried afterward, especially once I’m home. These are the details I’d compare alongside the price:

What matters What to look for
An experienced team Doctors and a laboratory experienced in freezing eggs and using frozen eggs in treatment later.
Results that relate to you Results for women who froze their eggs at your age, with a clear explanation of what the numbers mean. [12]
A plan for your goals A doctor who explains how many eggs they recommend freezing, why, and whether that could take more than one round.
Careful storage Clear information about how your eggs are identified, stored and monitored.
Support after treatment Knowing who to contact after retrieval, including once you’re back home.

Like the U.S., Spain has a public directory of fertility clinics. You can check a Spanish clinic’s authorization in the Ministry of Health’s register. [11, 15]

You can compare locations, patient support and reported IVF outcome data in Amaley’s fertility clinic comparison tool.

FAQ

How much does egg freezing cost in New York and California?

Cofertility lists $13,000–$21,000 for one cycle with medication in New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles, before storage and extra charges. I’m using $20,000 as the New York planning budget in this article. That is a budget to work from, not a citywide average. [1, 3]

How much does egg freezing cost in Spain?

The two clinics listed above publish treatment prices of €2,695 at Institut Marquès and from €3,090 at IVI. I’m budgeting €3,000 for treatment plus €1,000 for medication, before travel and storage. Check what each package includes: Institut Marquès includes two years of storage in its Preserve ESSENTIAL package. [5, 6, 7]

What should an egg freezing quote include?

Whether the quote says egg freezing or egg cryopreservation, ask for the same breakdown: consultation, tests, monitoring, medication, retrieval, anesthesia, freezing and storage. Get the exclusions in writing. You also need a separate quote for using the eggs later, because that treatment adds another bill. [13, 17]

How much does egg freezing medication cost?

Cofertility lists $3,000–$6,000 for medication, while CCRM New York publishes a range of $4,000–$10,800. The Spain budget here includes €1,000 for medication. Your prescription determines the actual amount, so check whether the clinic’s headline price includes it before you compare quotes. [1, 3, 4, 7]

How much does it cost to store frozen eggs each year?

This article uses $1,200 a year in New York and €300 a year in Spain, where the published range cited is €300–€400. At unchanged rates, ten paid years add $12,000 or €3,000, respectively. Your own total should account for any included storage years. Check when billing starts and whether the annual fee can rise. [7, 8]

What if I need more than one round?

Using this article’s budgets, two rounds come to $40,000 in New York or $15,720 in Spain with a separate trip for each round, before storage. Ask for multi-cycle prices before booking, and whether one annual storage fee covers eggs from all your rounds. Your doctor can help you estimate how many rounds to budget for. [9, 12]

Is egg freezing in Spain still cheaper after flights and hotels?

Yes, in the example here. Treatment, medication and the travel allowances total $7,860, compared with the $20,000 New York treatment budget, before storage. Use Amaley’s cost calculator to compare your options, then add any lost income or coordination fees to your budget.

Can I stay in Spain for multiple rounds instead of making separate trips?

Possibly, if your doctor recommends it and the clinic can schedule it. Staying could save you repeat flights, but you’ll need to budget for extra accommodation and time away. Have the clinic confirm your treatment schedule before booking travel. The comparison above assumes a separate trip for each round.

Does insurance cover egg freezing?

Some plans and employer fertility benefits do. KFF’s 2024 survey found that 12% of U.S. employers with 200 or more employees that offered health benefits reported coverage for egg or sperm freezing. Ask your insurer or benefits provider to confirm your eligibility, approved clinics, medication and storage coverage, and spending or cycle limits in writing before you pay. [16]

How much does it cost to use frozen eggs later?

There’s another treatment bill. The eggs must be thawed and fertilized to create embryos before an embryo can be transferred. Extend Fertility currently lists $6,500 for thawing and fertilization plus $4,900 for one frozen embryo transfer: $11,400 combined. That is one clinic’s example, before extras such as medication, optional genetic testing or additional transfers. [13, 17] Get a separate quote wherever you plan to use your eggs.

Does a lower egg freezing price mean lower-quality care?

A price tag cannot tell you how experienced the team is. Check the clinic’s authorization, its laboratory’s experience and results for women who froze eggs at your age. You can use Spain’s official clinic register and Amaley’s clinic comparison tool as starting points. No clinic can guarantee a future baby. [11, 12, 13]

What happens to the bill if my cycle is cancelled or no eggs are frozen?

Get the clinic’s cancellation and refund policy before paying a deposit. Ask which fees are refundable, which costs you would still owe and how a cancelled round affects any multi-cycle package. Ask separately what you would pay if retrieval goes ahead but no mature eggs are suitable for freezing.
